What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL is an NDIS-funded support that helps people with disability live as independently as possible, while still receiving the assistance they need. It usually applies to people who live in shared accommodation or group homes, but can also be arranged for individuals living on their own.

SIL provides help with daily tasks like personal care, cooking, cleaning, and medication management.

It supports you to build your skills and confidence over time.

The level of support is tailored to your individual needs, from 24/7 assistance to help at certain times of the day.

    Who is SIL for?

SIL is designed for NDIS participants who:

    • Require regular support throughout the day to live safely and comfortably.
    • Want to build their independence in a home-like setting.
    • Are seeking to live with others or in a supported environment.

It’s commonly used by people with intellectual disability, autism, or physical disabilities who need ongoing assistance.

How can Supported Independent Living help you?

SIL can help you in more than one way, which are as follows:

Promotes independence — SIL helps you learn and practise skills that increase your ability to manage everyday life.

Provides safety and security — Regular support ensures you can live safely, with help always available when you need it.

Encourages social connections — Living in shared accommodation with SIL can help you build friendships and a sense of community.

Personalised support — Your SIL plan is designed around your goals, abilities, and preferences.
