FAQs

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is created to empower people with disability to:

  • work towards achieving their personal goals,
  • determine the support they need related to their disability, and
  • decide where they want to purchase these supports.

To learn more about the NDIS and how it can benefit you, visit NDIS.gov.au.

What does the NDIS support?

The NDIS provides support for:

  • people living with a permanent disability and children with developmental delay, along with their families and carers, by funding reasonable and necessary supports tailored to each person’s individual needs.
  • all Australians, by offering a safety net for anyone who may develop a disability in the future.

What does the NDIS fund?

The NDIS provides funding for the ‘reasonable and necessary’ support that people with disability need to meet their needs and work towards their goals.

What does a 'reasonable and necessary' support mean?

The NDIS funds ‘reasonable and necessary’ supports that help you meet your needs and achieve your goals. These supports must:

  • be listed in your NDIS plan as helping you. achieve your goals
  • relate directly to your disability.
  • support your involvement in the community, or help you find paid or volunteer work.
  • not cover everyday living costs that aren’t linked to your disability.
  • offer good value for money.
  • be beneficial to you and based on evidence that they work.
  • consider the informal help you already receive from family, carers, or the community.

What does the NDIS not fund?

The NDIS does not fund supports that aren’t connected to your disability or that are part of regular living costs. It also doesn’t take the place of funding that should come from other services like education, health, or transport, these will continue to be provided as they are now.
