Short Term and Medium Term Accommodation: What’s the Difference?

What is Short Term Accommodation (STA)?

STA, also known as respite care, is designed to provide participants with temporary housing and support for a short period. It gives carers a break, and participants a chance to try new things, make friends, and develop skills in a different setting.

Typically covers stays up to 28 days in a year.

Includes accommodation, personal care, food, and activities.

Can be used for planned respite or emergencies.

What is Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)?

MTA provides temporary housing for participants who are waiting for their permanent home to become ready. This might include situations where someone is waiting for home modifications or for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) to be built.

Usually funded for up to 90 days.

Helps people who are ready to leave hospital or aged care but need somewhere safe to stay before moving into long-term housing.

Does not include everyday living costs like food — it covers the cost of housing but not the supports.
